How effective is allergy medication for allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye-surface reaction to an allergen such as pollen, dust or animal dander. Antihistamine or other allergy eye treatments can calm the chemical signals that drive itching and watering. Some products work best when used regularly during exposure, while others are intended for short-term relief.

Treatment cannot prevent every exposure, and dry or irritated eyes may have another cause. Rubbing can worsen swelling and irritation. If one eye is affected, vision changes, or pain is prominent, the problem may need assessment rather than allergy treatment alone.

Use drops or tablets exactly as directed, and check whether a product is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, contact-lens use and other medicines. Wash hands before eye drops, avoid touching the bottle tip to the eye, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Reduce exposure to known triggers where practical.

Arrange a review if symptoms do not settle, recur frequently, or interfere with vision or sleep. Do not use someone else's eye medicine or continue a redness-relief product beyond its directions.
