How effective is acne scar laser treatment for atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are depressions caused by loss or disruption of supporting tissue. Laser energy can resurface the skin or heat deeper layers, prompting healing and collagen remodelling. This may soften uneven texture and make shallow depressions less conspicuous. A sharply narrow ice-pick scar, a broad rolling scar tethered below the surface, and a boxcar scar do not behave alike, so one setting cannot suit every indentation.

The change is gradual rather than immediate. Redness, swelling, peeling, sensitivity, or temporary colour change may occur while the skin heals. New acne can create further scars, so treatment planning often includes control of active breakouts.

Have the scars examined in person and ask the provider to explain which ones laser can reach. Share your skin tone, tanning history, tendency toward dark marks or raised scars, cold-sore history, eczema, and medicines. Follow preparation instructions and avoid treating sunburned or broken skin.

Call the treating clinic if pain or swelling increases, redness spreads, or the area develops pus, blisters, fever, or worsening warmth.
