How effective is abdominal ultrasound for gallstones?

The scan can show stones, gallbladder-wall thickening, fluid around the gallbladder and widening of the bile ducts. It may help explain pain under the right ribs, especially after meals, but an image finding must be matched with your symptoms and examination.

A clear scan does not exclude every cause of upper abdominal pain. The gallbladder can be difficult to view if bowel gas or body position limits the images. Stones in the common bile duct may also be missed, so persistent symptoms can lead to blood tests or another type of imaging.

Follow the preparation instructions, which may involve not eating for a period before the appointment. Bring details of pain timing, meals that trigger it, fever, vomiting and any yellowing of the eyes. If stones are found without symptoms, your clinician will explain whether observation is suitable; repeated attacks or complications may require a treatment discussion.

Read the report with your clinician rather than assuming every abdominal pain episode is caused by a stone. The next step depends on the gallbladder appearance, blood tests and your pattern of symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening upper abdominal pain, fever with chills, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, fainting or marked weakness. These features can signal inflammation or blocked bile flow and need timely assessment.

Ask whether the scan shows stones, inflammation or bile-duct enlargement, and whether your symptoms fit the finding. Clarify whether blood tests or further imaging are needed, and what symptoms should prompt emergency care.
