How does partial knee replacement work?

The knee has compartments that can wear differently. During surgery, the surgeon removes damaged surfaces from the affected compartment and prepares the bone for fitted components. A metal component covers the thighbone side, another may cover the shinbone side, and a smooth plastic bearing allows them to move against each other. The ligaments and other compartments may remain in place when they are suitable. This approach is usually considered only after examination and imaging confirm that damage is limited and the knee is stable. Knee osteoarthritis is a common reason for assessment.

Discuss medicines, dental or skin infections, home support, and the walking aid you may use initially. After surgery, exercises help restore knee movement, thigh strength, balance, and safe walking. Follow guidance on wound care, bathing, driving, stairs, and activity. Do not increase exercise simply because the incision feels better; the joint and soft tissues still need a graded return. Keep appointments so movement, swelling, and implant position can be reviewed.

Call the care team about increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that is not settling as expected. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, severe calf pain or swelling, or a foot that becomes cold or changes colour. A fall, locking episode, or sudden inability to bear weight should be reported promptly.
