How does oral antifungal treatment work?

After a tablet is absorbed, its medicine travels in the bloodstream and reaches areas that creams may not penetrate well, including the nail plate or hair follicle. Different medicines act on different fungal processes: terbinafine, for example, interferes with a substance fungi need to build their cell membrane. As infected skin sheds or a nail grows, healthier tissue replaces the affected portion.

The medicine must match the suspected fungus. Athlete's foot, tinea versicolor, tinea incognito, and skin yeast infection can look similar to other rashes, so examination or testing may be needed before treatment.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed, at the advised time, and do not share tablets or use leftover courses. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, pregnancy, other medicines, and alcohol use because interactions and monitoring may matter. Keep affected skin clean and dry, change damp socks or clothing, and follow any topical treatment plan. Nail colour or texture may remain altered until new nail grows.

Stop and contact the prescriber promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, severe nausea, persistent abdominal pain, widespread rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Return for review if the infection spreads, becomes painful, or fails to improve as expected.
