How does oophorectomy work?

The operation takes place under anaesthesia. The surgeon separates the ovary from nearby tissues, controls its blood supply and removes it; the fallopian tube may also be removed. A laparoscopic surgery system can support small-incision surgery, while an open approach may be chosen when a larger access route is needed.

Removing one ovary usually leaves the other ovary able to release hormones and eggs. Removing both ovaries causes an abrupt loss of ovarian hormone production and ends ovulation, so effects on fertility and menopause should be discussed beforehand. Surgery may be considered for an ovarian mass, Ovarian Cancer or inherited risk linked to a BRCA Gene Mutation.

Ask which approach is planned, whether the uterus and tubes will remain, and how fertility or hormone treatment may be affected. Arrange help for the early recovery period, follow wound instructions, walk as advised and avoid lifting or sexual activity until your surgical team confirms it is appropriate.

After surgery, seek urgent medical advice for heavy bleeding, worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, shortness of breath, a swollen painful leg or a wound that becomes increasingly red or drains pus.
