How does microwave sweat gland treatment work?

The clinician maps the underarm, numbs the area, and places an applicator against the skin. Microwave energy is directed into the layer containing many sweat and odour glands, while built-in cooling helps protect the surface. The treated glands are not needed for the body's overall temperature control because sweat glands elsewhere remain active. The aim is to reduce underarm sweating and odour, not to stop sweating throughout the body.

The approach may be considered for axillary hyperhidrosis or bromhidrosis after an assessment. It is different from botulinum toxin for sweating, which reduces nerve signalling to glands rather than targeting tissue with microwave energy.

Discuss implanted devices, altered sensation, skin disease, previous underarm procedures, and medicines with the clinician. Follow instructions about shaving and deodorant before the appointment.
