How Does Lip Filler Work?

Many lip treatments use hyaluronic acid filler, a gel that binds water and can be moulded by the injector. Placement may focus on the vermilion border, cupid's bow, body of the lip or areas that look uneven. The aim can be subtle definition, fuller lips or correction of age-related volume loss; it should be planned around your anatomy rather than a standard shape. Thin lips can be one reason someone considers treatment, but filler cannot correct every concern about proportion or movement.

A qualified clinician should review allergies, previous filler, cold sores, dental work, bleeding risks and medicines before injecting. After treatment, swelling, tenderness, bruising and temporary firmness are common possibilities. Use the aftercare instructions provided, avoid pressing or massaging the area unless specifically told to do so, and postpone strenuous activity or heat exposure if advised. Fat transfer is a different option that uses harvested body fat and involves a surgical procedure.

Contact the injector urgently for severe or increasing pain, pale or dusky skin, unusual coolness, marked one-sided swelling or vision changes after injection. These symptoms can signal impaired blood flow and need rapid assessment. Seek immediate help for trouble breathing or swelling of the tongue or throat. Fever, pus or spreading redness also requires prompt review.
