How does laparoscopic excision of endometriosis work?

Short answer
Laparoscopic excision uses a camera and fine instruments through small abdominal openings to identify and cut away endometriosis tissue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the operation involves
Under anaesthesia, the surgeon makes small openings in the abdomen and inserts a camera. The pelvis is inspected for endometriosis deposits, scar tissue, and involvement of nearby organs. Fine instruments are used to separate and remove visible deposits, with care around the bowel, bladder, ureters, ovaries, and reproductive organs.
The removed tissue may be sent for laboratory examination. Excision differs from simply burning the surface: it aims to remove the deposit itself, although the exact approach depends on its depth and location. Diagnostic laparoscopy may be performed first when the diagnosis or extent is uncertain.
Planning and recovery
Before surgery, discuss your symptoms, fertility plans, previous operations, medicines, and any bowel or bladder symptoms. Ask whether a specialist team may be needed if disease is close to an organ. Recovery varies with the amount and location of tissue removed; tiredness, shoulder-tip discomfort from the surgical gas, and temporary pelvic soreness can occur.
Arrange help for the first period at home and follow instructions about wound care, activity, bathing, sex, and returning to work. Treatment may also include symptom management after surgery because removing visible deposits does not prevent new disease from developing.
When to seek urgent help
Contact the surgical team urgently for worsening abdominal pain, a fever, repeated vomiting, faintness, heavy vaginal bleeding, increasing redness or discharge from a wound, difficulty passing urine, or new breathing problems. Sudden severe pain or marked abdominal swelling also needs prompt assessment.
Questions to ask
Ask what areas are affected, whether tissue will be tested, how nearby organs will be protected, what recovery limits apply, and how the plan relates to pain control and fertility.

Questions people ask
Can excision treat pelvic pain?
Removing visible endometriosis may help some people with pelvic pain, but symptoms can have more than one cause and may persist.
Is diagnostic laparoscopy the same operation?
Diagnostic laparoscopy looks inside the pelvis to assess findings; excision adds removal of suitable endometriosis tissue.
