How Does FUE Hair Transplant Work?

A clinician maps the hairline and selects a donor zone, commonly at the back or sides of the scalp, where follicles are more resistant to pattern loss. After local anaesthetic is applied, a small FUE punch separates each follicular unit from surrounding skin. The grafts are sorted and kept protected before tiny recipient sites are prepared in the thinning area. Each unit is then placed with attention to angle, direction and density so the result follows natural growth patterns.

The transplanted hairs initially shed as the follicles adjust. New growth develops gradually from the retained follicle, while the donor area heals with small marks that can be difficult to see once healed. FUE can be used for androgenetic alopecia, but suitability depends on donor supply, the cause and pattern of loss, and realistic expectations.

At a consultation, disclose medicines, scalp conditions, smoking or vaping, and previous procedures. Follow the clinic’s washing, sleeping and activity instructions after treatment; avoid rubbing or picking at grafts while they settle. A treatment plan may use manual extraction or a device such as an FUE punch, and some clinics discuss a robotic system. Compare approaches such as DHI or FUT only after the clinician has assessed your scalp.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, swelling, redness or warmth is worsening rather than settling, or if the wounds produce pus, bleed persistently, or open. Seek urgent medical help for fever with severe illness, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading rash. These symptoms need assessment because they may signal infection, bleeding or a reaction rather than routine healing.

Ask how many grafts your donor area can safely provide, how the hairline will be designed, what will happen if hair loss continues, and which aftercare steps protect the grafts. Ask when you can wash, exercise and return to work, and how progress will be reviewed.
