How do you know when your wrist is sprained?

Short answer

You may suspect a wrist sprain when pain and swelling follow a twist or fall, but an examination may be needed to separate it from a fracture.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Clues to notice after the injury

A sprain affects the ligaments that steady the wrist. Symptoms can begin immediately or become clearer as swelling develops. Tenderness, bruising, aching with gripping and difficulty turning a key are useful details to record. The exact place of tenderness and whether you can move your fingers can help a clinician judge the injury.

The event matters too: landing on an outstretched hand, a sudden twist or a forceful bend can injure more than one structure. Wrist pain may come from a sprain, fracture or tendon problem, so symptom timing alone cannot confirm the cause.

Practical steps while you monitor it

Stop the activity that caused pain and avoid heavy gripping. Elevate the hand, apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for brief intervals, and keep jewellery off the swollen hand. A comfortable wrist support can limit aggravating movement, but loosen it if your fingers tingle, change colour or feel cold.

Keep the fingers moving gently unless this increases pain. Once the wrist is settling, gradual motion is preferable to testing it with lifting or sport. Physiotherapy can help restore coordination and strength; splinting may be suggested for a short period depending on the examination.

When a check-up should not wait

Seek urgent care for a visibly crooked wrist, severe or worsening pain, numbness, blue or pale fingers, an open injury, or inability to move the hand. Arrange medical review when swelling is substantial, there is pinpoint tenderness over a bone, or symptoms remain troublesome rather than gradually easing. These features can occur with a fracture and should not be judged by appearance alone.

Useful questions at an appointment

Ask what structure may be injured, whether an X-ray is appropriate, and whether you need a brace or splint. Clarify which exercises are safe, how to protect the wrist at work, and what improvement should look like before you return to demanding activity.

Yes. Swelling and bruising may become more noticeable after the initial injury.
