How did I sprain my wrist?

Short answer
You may sprain your wrist when a sudden force stretches or tears one of its supporting ligaments.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical force
- A fall, twist or sudden load
- Possible result
- Ligament stretch or tear
Common injury mechanisms
A fall onto an open hand can bend the wrist backward and strain its ligaments. A twist while lifting, a collision during sport, or catching a heavy or moving object can create a similar load. A ligament may be overstretched, partly torn or more severely disrupted. Pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness and reduced movement can follow. Because a fracture or tendon injury may happen through the same mechanism, the event alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
What to do after the injury
Stop the activity and remove rings before swelling increases. Support the wrist in a comfortable position, use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for short periods, and keep the hand raised when practical. Avoid forceful gripping and testing the wrist repeatedly. A splint may be recommended after assessment; taping can support some activities when applied appropriately. Physiotherapy can later address movement, strength and a safe return to normal use.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help if the wrist is deformed, the hand is numb or cold, the fingers change colour, or movement is severely restricted. Arrange an examination when pain is severe, swelling is substantial, tenderness sits directly over a bone, or symptoms remain after initial protection. These features can require evaluation for a fracture or more significant tissue damage.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ligament may be involved, whether imaging is needed, whether a splint is appropriate, and when gentle movement, taping or physiotherapy should begin.
