How is dermatosis papulosa nigra different in skin of colour?

DPN consists of benign, usually firm papules that may be brown, dark brown, or black. They commonly develop around the cheeks, temples, forehead, and neck, and can increase gradually over time. In richly pigmented skin, their colour may blend with or stand out from surrounding skin depending on the person. A new or changing bump should not be assumed to be DPN because other growths can look similar.

The main difference in skin of colour is the risk of a visible dark or light mark after irritation, scraping, burning, or inflammation. This post-treatment pigment change can last longer than the original healing period.

Arrange an examination before removal, especially if a bump is new, asymmetric, bleeding, crusted, itchy, or changing quickly. A clinician may recommend observation when the diagnosis is clear and the bumps are not troublesome. If removal is wanted, discuss a test spot, conservative settings, and sun protection during healing. Possible methods include snipping, electrosurgery, or laser, but the choice depends on the bump, skin response, location, and the clinician's experience with skin of colour. Do not pick or use home acids on the bumps.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a lesion that changes rapidly, bleeds without a clear cause, develops a persistent sore, becomes painful, or differs noticeably from your other bumps. After removal, seek care for worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or a growing pale or dark patch. These signs may reflect infection, delayed healing, or a diagnosis that needs reconsideration.
