How are dermal fillers different in pregnancy?

Dermal fillers place a gel beneath or within the skin using a needle or cannula. Pregnancy can alter immune responses, skin sensitivity, fluid balance, and how medicines are considered. The procedure is elective, so there is generally no medical need to accept an uncertain exposure while pregnant. Product ingredients, numbing medicines, antiseptics, and treatment of a possible complication also need review. A filler that was suitable before pregnancy is not automatically suitable now.

Changes in facial fullness during pregnancy can also make it harder to judge the cosmetic result. Breastfeeding raises a separate discussion because evidence and product-specific advice may differ.

Tell the injector that you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding before booking. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but ask whether any current skin treatment should be adjusted. If filler was injected before you knew you were pregnant, contact your obstetric clinician and injector with the product name, treatment date, and any numbing medicine used. Watch the area without massaging it unless your clinician directs you to do so. Postpone further elective injections until your treating clinicians agree that the timing is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical assessment for rapidly increasing pain or swelling, spreading redness, fever, pus, marked skin colour change, blistering, or vision symptoms after an injection. Breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or widespread hives may signal a severe allergic reaction and needs emergency care. Pregnancy-related concerns such as severe headache, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement should be directed to your maternity team rather than attributed to filler.
