How is dementia different in older adults?

Short answer
Dementia in older adults involves persistent changes in memory, thinking or daily function that go beyond expected age-related forgetfulness and need an individual assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it can look in later life
Normal ageing can include occasionally forgetting a name and remembering it later. Dementia may cause repeated difficulty learning new information, managing familiar tasks, finding words, judging situations, or recognising familiar places. The changes usually interfere with independence over time, although the pattern and pace vary between people.
Older adults may have several health conditions or take medicines that affect attention, balance or memory. Hearing or vision problems, low mood, poor sleep, infection and other medical problems can also make thinking seem worse. A careful review helps separate dementia from treatable contributors and from delirium, which is a sudden change in attention and awareness.
Steps that help
Arrange a clinical assessment if changes persist or affect cooking, finances, medicines, driving, personal care or communication. Bring a trusted person who can describe changes over time, and take a list of medicines and relevant medical history. Write down examples, when they started, and whether they fluctuate.
Keep routines predictable, improve lighting and reduce background noise during conversations. Use labelled storage, calendars or reminders if helpful. Support should preserve the person's choices and dignity; avoid arguing over a forgotten detail and instead offer calm, simple prompts.
When changes need urgent attention
Seek urgent help for sudden confusion, a new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, a severe headache, a fall with injury, fever with marked drowsiness, or a rapid change in behaviour. Sudden confusion is not explained by ordinary ageing and may signal delirium, stroke, infection or another emergency. Do not leave a suddenly confused person alone if they may wander, fall or take unsafe medicines.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which changes are most concerning, what tests or medication review may be useful, how to support safety at home, and whether hearing, vision, sleep or mood could be contributing. Discuss driving, advance planning and who should help with appointments while the assessment continues.
