How common is waters breaking in preterm labour?

The waters are the fluid-filled membranes surrounding the baby. They may release as a sudden gush or as a slow, repeated dampness. Before the stage of pregnancy when labour is considered full term, membrane rupture can occur with contractions or before contractions begin. Most people with Preterm Labour notice waters breaking, yet leaking fluid can also be urine, normal discharge, or another vaginal fluid. The appearance and smell alone cannot confirm the source.

Place a clean pad in your underwear and note when the wetness started, its colour, and whether it keeps coming. Do not use a tampon, have vaginal sex, or put anything into the vagina while waiting for advice. Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team promptly, even if the leak is small or contractions are absent. Assessment may include questions, examination, and checks of you and the baby.

Seek urgent maternity care for suspected waters breaking before term, especially with regular tightenings, pelvic pressure, backache, bleeding, fever, feeling unwell, reduced baby movements, or fluid that is green, brown, or blood-stained. Do not wait for the leak to become heavy. If you cannot reach your maternity service, use local emergency services.

Ask how the fluid will be tested, whether you need monitoring or treatment, which symptoms should bring you back immediately, and how to track movements and temperature at home. You can also ask what activities to avoid and who to contact outside clinic hours.
