How common is vulval pain in a Bartholin cyst?

The Bartholin glands sit near the lower vaginal opening and release fluid through small ducts. If a duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect and form a cyst. A small cyst may feel like a lump and cause little discomfort. Pain is more likely when the swelling presses on surrounding tissue or an infection develops, making the area tender, hot, red, or more swollen.

Pain may be worse when walking, sitting, or having sex. A clinician can usually assess the position and features of the swelling with an examination. Similar symptoms can come from other vulval cysts, skin inflammation, or infection, so do not try to diagnose the cause from pain alone.

Book an appointment if pain persists, the lump is enlarging, or sitting and walking are becoming difficult. While waiting, keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or attempting to drain the swelling, and wear loose clothing.
