Short answer

Vomiting is a very common presentation of Norovirus Infection and often occurs with sudden nausea, watery diarrhoea, and stomach cramps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Frequency
Vomiting is very common with norovirus infection.
Main concern
Fluid loss can become significant when vomiting and diarrhoea occur together.
Spread control
Soap-and-water handwashing and surface cleaning are important.

What the pattern suggests

Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach infection that can cause abrupt vomiting and diarrhoea. Nausea, abdominal cramps, feverishness, headache, and body aches may also occur. Vomiting can stop a person from replacing lost fluid, while diarrhoea adds further loss. The symptom pattern can fit norovirus, but vomiting has many causes and does not confirm the infection. Several people becoming ill around the same time can make an infectious cause more plausible.

Fluids and infection control

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution; after vomiting, pause briefly and restart with smaller amounts. Continue breastfeeding when relevant and return to simple foods as appetite allows. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, clean contaminated surfaces, avoid preparing food for others, and stay home while actively unwell. Do not rely on hand sanitiser alone for preventing spread of norovirus.

When to seek medical help

Seek urgent advice for severe dehydration, very little urine, fainting, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment. The Vomiting guide provides broader information about managing this symptom.

Questions for a clinician

Ask how to choose an oral rehydration product, how much fluid is suitable for a child or older adult, and which warning signs require same-day assessment. Mention urine changes, the timing of vomiting and diarrhoea, recent contacts who were ill, and any medicines that could affect hydration.
