How common is vomiting in gallstones?

A gallstone can obstruct bile flow and cause pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen. The pain may spread towards the back or right shoulder and can occur with nausea or vomiting. Many gallstones cause no symptoms, while an attack can be intense and persistent. Vomiting does not establish that gallstones are present; stomach illness, pancreatitis, and other abdominal problems can cause similar symptoms.

Rest and take small sips of fluid if you can keep them down. Avoid a meal that clearly worsens the pain, and do not use leftover prescription medicine. Note the pain location, its start time, relation to food, vomiting, fever, urine colour, and stool changes. A clinician may examine your abdomen and decide whether blood tests or imaging are needed.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, confusion, fainting, or repeated vomiting. These features can signal inflammation or blockage affecting the gallbladder, bile ducts, or pancreas. Arrange medical review for recurrent attacks even if the pain settles, because repeated symptoms may need a treatment discussion.
