How common is vision changes in pregnancy in eclampsia?

Eclampsia involves seizures associated with a pregnancy-related blood-pressure disorder. Visual symptoms can occur before a seizure, but they may also arise during or after a seizure. A person can need urgent assessment even without a known history of high blood pressure. The cause cannot be judged safely from the visual symptom alone.

If you develop new visual changes during pregnancy or after birth, call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department now. Do not drive yourself. Tell the team that you are pregnant or recently gave birth, describe when the change began, and mention headache, upper-abdominal pain, swelling, breathlessness, or reduced fetal movement if present. Keep away from stairs and lie on your side while waiting for help if you feel faint.

Treat any new flashing lights, blurred vision, double vision, a dark curtain, or visual loss as urgent. A seizure, severe headache, confusion, collapse, breathing difficulty, or severe pain under the ribs requires emergency help immediately. These symptoms should not be monitored at home while waiting for them to pass.

After urgent assessment, ask what your blood-pressure readings and tests show, whether you need observation or treatment, and how your baby will be monitored. Ask which warning symptoms should trigger immediate return after discharge.
