How common is visible deformity after injury in distal radius fracture?

The distal radius is the end of the forearm bone next to the wrist. When it breaks, the wrist can appear bent, shifted or shortened, particularly after a fall onto the hand. Swelling and bruising may obscure the exact shape, and a less obvious appearance does not exclude a fracture. An examination and X-ray help assess alignment, joint involvement and the condition of the fingers’ circulation and nerve supply. The wrist should not be judged by appearance alone.

Remove rings, watches and tight bracelets before swelling increases. Rest the arm, support the wrist in a comfortable position and keep the hand raised when practical. Use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not force the wrist straight, test its strength, or rely on the hand for lifting. Arrange prompt evaluation so a clinician can immobilise it appropriately and decide whether the alignment needs correction.

Seek emergency care if fingers become numb, unusually weak, blue, pale or cold, or if pain and swelling rapidly worsen. An open wound over the wrist, severe pressure from swelling, or inability to move the fingers is also urgent. Keep checking that the fingers remain warm and responsive while waiting, without repeatedly moving the injured wrist. Do not drive if the hand cannot be used safely.

Ask whether the break affects the wrist joint and whether the bones are in a safe position. Discuss the type and duration of immobilisation, finger exercises, bathing, work and driving restrictions, and symptoms that require review. Ask when wrist movement and physiotherapy should start.
