How common is vaginal odour in bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis happens when the usual balance of vaginal bacteria changes. This can produce chemicals with a fishy smell. Odour can also occur with other vaginal infections, a retained tampon, irritation, or changes in discharge, so the symptom does not establish the diagnosis by itself. A clinician may ask about discharge, itching, pain, bleeding, pregnancy, and sexual health, then offer an examination or swab if needed.

Arrange a medical assessment if the odour is new, persistent, or accompanied by unusual discharge. Avoid douching and scented washes, which can irritate the vulva and make symptoms harder to interpret. Use plain water or a gentle unscented cleanser externally, and do not place home remedies inside the vagina. If treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and return if symptoms remain.

Seek prompt care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, pain during sex, bleeding that is unusual for you, or feeling very unwell. If you are pregnant and notice new odour or discharge, contact your maternity team so the symptoms can be assessed in context.
