How common is vaginal discharge in vaginal thrush?

Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Discharge may be thick, white, and clumpy, and it often appears alongside itching, soreness, redness, or burning when urine touches irritated skin. Some people have little discharge but still have marked irritation.

Discharge alone cannot confirm thrush. A change in smell, a yellow or green colour, pelvic pain, sores, or bleeding can point to another problem and needs a different assessment. A clinician may ask about recent antibiotics, diabetes, pregnancy, skin irritation, and previous episodes.

Keep the area dry, wash gently with water or an unscented cleanser, and avoid douching, scented products, and tight clothing. Breathable underwear can reduce moisture and friction. Avoid sex if it worsens soreness.

A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an antifungal treatment when thrush fits your symptoms. Follow the product directions and seek advice before self-treating if this is your first episode, symptoms keep returning, or you are pregnant or immunocompromised.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms do not improve after treatment, return soon after treatment, or keep recurring. Seek prompt care for fever, lower abdominal pain, significant swelling, sores, unusual bleeding, or discharge with a strong unpleasant smell.
