How common is vaginal discharge in chlamydia?

Discharge may occur with burning when passing urine, bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, or lower abdominal discomfort. Its colour and texture are not enough to distinguish chlamydia from other infections or non-infectious causes. A test is the reliable way to check for chlamydia when exposure or symptoms raise concern.

Arrange sexual-health or primary-care testing if the discharge is new, if a partner has an infection, or if there has been sex without a barrier method with a new or untested partner. Until you receive advice and treatment, avoid sex or use condoms consistently. Partners may need assessment so infection is not passed back and forth.

Get prompt care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, pain during sex, vomiting, or feeling unwell with discharge. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding. Untreated chlamydia can spread upward into the reproductive organs, where it may cause more serious inflammation.
