How Crohn's disease can lead to weight loss
Crohn's disease causes inflammation in parts of the digestive tract. Pain, diarrhoea, nausea or a reduced appetite can make eating difficult, while inflammation may affect digestion and nutrient absorption. During a flare, the body may also need more energy. Weight loss can therefore accompany abdominal pain, frequent stools, urgency, blood or mucus in the stool, mouth ulcers and fatigue. These symptoms can also have other causes, so the pattern and examination matter.
What to do next
Arrange a medical review if weight is falling without trying, especially with ongoing diarrhoea, abdominal pain or tiredness. Bring details of bowel frequency, stool appearance, appetite, pain, fever, medicines and any foods you avoid. A clinician may assess hydration and nutrition and arrange blood or stool tests, or refer you for specialist review. Do not restrict foods broadly without advice, because this can make it harder to meet nutritional needs.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever with significant diarrhoea, rapid deterioration or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very little urine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms could reflect active Crohn's disease, what tests are appropriate, and how to protect nutrition during symptoms. Ask when to contact the team again if weight continues to fall or bowel symptoms change.
