How common is unexplained weight loss in pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer can affect digestion and appetite. When the pancreas does not release digestive enzymes effectively, food may not be fully absorbed. Pain, nausea, altered taste, early fullness, anxiety, and tiredness can also make eating difficult. Weight loss may develop gradually or become more noticeable over a short period.

Weight loss on its own does not identify the cause. Digestive conditions, medicines, mood changes, thyroid problems, infections, and changes in diet can also contribute. The useful detail is the pattern: how much weight has changed, whether you intended it, and which symptoms appeared alongside it.

Arrange a medical review if you are losing weight without trying. Bring a record of your usual weight, recent changes in appetite, bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and any yellowing of the skin or eyes. A clinician can assess the full picture and decide whether blood tests, imaging, or referral are appropriate.

Until you are assessed, take small frequent meals if larger meals feel difficult and sip fluids regularly. Do not force foods that worsen nausea; note the triggers so you can describe them clearly.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, confusion, fainting, black stools, or yellow skin or eyes with feeling unwell. These symptoms need timely assessment regardless of their cause.
