Short answer

Unexplained fever is a common presentation of childhood cancer, but a fever by itself does not show why a child is unwell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Putting fever in context

Children often develop fevers with common viral illnesses and other infections. In childhood cancer, fever can be part of the way the illness presents, and it may appear alongside persistent tiredness, unusual bruising, recurrent infections, bone pain, weight change, or swollen glands. None of these features alone confirms a diagnosis. What matters is the overall pattern, how the child is behaving, how long symptoms have lasted, and whether new concerns are appearing.

What parents and carers can do

Measure and record the temperature if possible, along with the date, other symptoms, fluid intake, and changes in energy or alertness. Arrange a clinical review when a fever has no clear explanation, keeps returning, or sits alongside symptoms that are unusual for the child. Bring a list of medicines and previous illnesses. If the child is already receiving cancer treatment, use the oncology team's fever plan straight away.

When care cannot wait

Seek urgent medical help if a child is difficult to wake, struggling to breathe, has a seizure, develops a non-fading rash, has severe headache or neck stiffness, cannot keep fluids down, or shows signs of dehydration. Fever during cancer treatment needs urgent advice from the treating team, even when there are no other noticeable symptoms.

Useful questions at the appointment

Ask what may be causing the fever, which changes should prompt an urgent return, and whether an examination or blood tests are needed. Parents can also ask how to monitor drinking, urine output, activity, and temperature safely at home.

Questions people ask

Does a recurring fever mean a child has cancer?

No. Recurring fever can have many explanations. A clinician can assess the pattern and any accompanying symptoms to decide what evaluation is needed.

What should a parent record before contacting a clinician?

Record the temperature, timing, associated symptoms, fluids, medicines, and changes in the child's activity or alertness.
