How common are swollen lymph nodes in lymphoma?

Lymphoma begins in cells of the immune system and can cause lymph tissue to expand. The exact pattern depends on the lymphoma type and the areas involved. Some people also notice fever, night sweating, itching, tiredness or weight loss; others have no general symptoms. Swelling is not specific to lymphoma: infection, inflammation and other conditions can enlarge lymph nodes too. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, imaging and tissue sampling when a definite diagnosis is needed.

Arrange a medical review for a lump that lasts, grows, feels unusual or appears in more than one area. Keep track of its location and timing, plus any fever, night sweating, itching or fatigue. Avoid repeatedly poking the node. Anyone already being treated for lymphoma should tell their care team about new or changing swelling so it can be interpreted with the rest of their health information.

Get emergency help if swelling causes serious breathing or swallowing difficulty, or if you develop fainting, confusion or severe weakness. Seek prompt advice for a steadily enlarging lump, persistent fever, drenching night sweats or unexplained weight loss. These warning features need assessment and are not a diagnosis on their own.
