How common are swollen lymph nodes in Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma can enlarge lymph nodes as abnormal lymph cells collect within them. One group may be affected, or several groups may be involved. Some people have fever, heavy night sweating, itching, tiredness or weight loss, while others mainly notice a lump. Infections and other illnesses can also cause swollen nodes. A clinician looks at the location, firmness and duration and may arrange blood tests, scans or a biopsy before making a diagnosis.

Book a clinical assessment for swelling that persists, grows or is not explained by a recent infection. Note whether the lump is painful and whether other areas have become enlarged. Do not massage or repeatedly check it. If Hodgkin lymphoma has already been diagnosed, report a new lump or a change in an existing one to the care team, including any fever, itching or night sweating.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing, quickly increasing swelling, fainting or severe weakness. Contact your clinician promptly if fever persists, night sweats soak clothing or bedding, or tiredness and weight loss are worsening. Those features can occur for several reasons and need timely medical review.
