How common are swollen glands in rubella?

Rubella can cause small, tender lymph nodes behind the ears and along the back of the neck. A fine rash may begin on the face and spread to the body, with a mild fever, sore throat, or aching joints. Some people have few symptoms, so the absence of a rash does not settle the question. The same lymph-node pattern can occur with other infections, and clinical assessment is needed.

Contact a clinician by telephone if rubella is possible and avoid close contact until you receive advice. This is especially important around anyone who is pregnant, because rubella during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby. Note when the swelling, rash, fever, and any exposure began. Do not attend an appointment without warning the service first.

Seek prompt advice for suspected rubella during pregnancy or after close contact with someone who may have it. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Persistent, hard, or enlarging glands also deserve an examination even if the other symptoms improve.
