How common are swollen glands in mumps?

Mumps mainly affects the salivary glands in front of and below the ears, so the face or jaw may look puffy and chewing or swallowing may hurt. Lymph nodes in the neck can also enlarge as the immune system responds. Fever, headache, tiredness, and muscle aches may occur. Swelling on one or both sides is possible. Similar jaw or neck swelling has other causes, so examination is needed when mumps is suspected.

Contact a healthcare service before going in and explain that mumps may be possible. Avoid close contact, sharing cups or utensils, and group settings until you receive isolation advice. Offer fluids and soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. A clinician can review vaccination history, exposure, symptoms, and whether testing or monitoring is needed.

Get urgent help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, seizures, breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, or marked dehydration. Prompt review is needed for severe testicular or lower abdominal pain, significant abdominal pain, or worsening facial swelling. Call before attending to protect other patients and staff.

Ask whether the swelling is from salivary glands, lymph nodes, or another cause; how long to avoid close contact; whether testing is useful; and which symptoms could indicate a complication. Ask when normal eating, work, school, or childcare can resume.
