How common are swollen glands in glandular fever?

Short answer
Swollen glands are a very common presentation of glandular fever, often alongside a sore throat.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How glandular fever affects lymph nodes
Glandular fever can trigger a strong immune response, making lymph nodes noticeably enlarged and tender. Nodes in the neck are often affected, although swelling can be felt elsewhere. Marked tiredness, fever, sore throat, and enlarged tonsils may accompany the gland swelling, and fatigue can outlast the throat symptoms.
These symptoms overlap with other infections, so swollen glands are not enough to identify glandular fever on their own. A clinician may assess the throat and abdomen, review your symptoms, and decide whether blood tests or other checks would clarify the cause.
Looking after yourself
Prioritise rest and fluids, and reduce activities that leave you exhausted. Use pain relief only as directed on the label or by your clinician. Avoid alcohol if you are unwell or have been advised that your liver may be affected. Do not share drinks, cutlery, or items that contact saliva while infectious illness is suspected.
Before returning to contact sport, heavy lifting, or strenuous exercise, get individual advice. Glandular fever can enlarge the spleen in some people, and protecting the abdomen from injury matters.
Warning signs to act on
Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva or fluids, severe dehydration, confusion, or severe abdominal pain, particularly on the upper left side. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms worsen after initial improvement, jaundice develops, or fatigue is making normal daily activities impossible.
Topics to discuss
Ask whether testing is useful, how to manage throat pain and fatigue, and when work, study, driving, or exercise can safely resume. Tell your clinician about abdominal pain, contact sports, regular medicines, and any condition that affects your immune system.

Questions people ask
Do swollen glands from glandular fever go away quickly?
The timing varies. Throat symptoms and gland tenderness can improve before tiredness fully settles, so seek advice if symptoms are not improving or are worsening.
Can I exercise with glandular fever?
Avoid strenuous and contact activity until a clinician says it is appropriate, because some people can have spleen enlargement during the illness.
