How common are swollen glands in the common cold?

Glands usually refer to lymph nodes, small structures that filter lymph fluid and help the body respond to infection. A cold can make nodes in the neck or under the jaw feel enlarged or sore. A runny or blocked nose, sore throat, cough, sneezing, and tiredness may occur at the same time.

A swollen gland does not by itself identify a cold. Dental problems, throat infections, skin infections, and other illnesses can also enlarge lymph nodes. The location, tenderness, duration, and any symptoms such as fever or weight change help a clinician decide whether further checks are needed.

Rest, drink fluids, and use simple comfort measures that are suitable for you. Warm drinks or gargles may ease throat discomfort. Follow the instructions for any over-the-counter pain relief, and ask a pharmacist if you take regular medicines or are unsure what is appropriate.

Avoid repeatedly pressing the enlarged area, as this can make it more tender. If cold symptoms are settling but the gland remains enlarged, arrange a routine review so its cause can be checked.

Arrange prompt assessment if a gland is becoming larger, feels hard or fixed, is located above the collarbone, or is accompanied by night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fever.
