How common is swelling in pregnancy with gestational hypertension?

Pregnancy can cause fluid to collect in the feet and ankles, especially later in the day. Gestational hypertension is high blood pressure that begins during pregnancy, and swelling may occur alongside it. Swelling of the hands or face, a sudden change in swelling, or swelling that does not settle deserves attention because the pattern matters more than the symptom in isolation.

A maternity clinician may check your blood pressure, urine, symptoms, and the baby's wellbeing. These checks help distinguish ordinary pregnancy-related fluid retention from a blood-pressure concern. A normal-feeling day does not replace scheduled antenatal monitoring.

Tell your midwife, obstetrician, or maternity unit about new, worsening, or unusual swelling. Keep appointments for blood-pressure checks and follow any monitoring plan you have been given. While waiting for advice, rest with your legs raised when comfortable, avoid standing still for long periods, and wear comfortable footwear. Do not start medicines, supplements, or a strict salt restriction without clinical guidance.

Contact your maternity service urgently for sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe or persistent headache, changes in vision, pain beneath the ribs, marked nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment during pregnancy, whether or not you have previously been told that your blood pressure is high. Seek emergency help if symptoms are severe or you cannot reach your maternity team.
