How common is sun sensitivity in cutaneous lupus?

Cutaneous lupus affects the skin and may cause rashes, plaques, scaling, sores, or changes in skin colour. Sun-sensitive areas can flare after outdoor exposure or sometimes after light through windows. The response may appear on the face, scalp, ears, neck, arms, or other exposed areas, and symptoms may not start immediately.

Use shade, closely woven clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Reapply sunscreen as directed, particularly after sweating or washing. A dermatologist can discuss prescription creams or other treatment if flares continue, and can help distinguish lupus activity from irritation or another rash.

Arrange medical review for a new, persistent, scaly, painful, or scarring rash, or for a flare that does not settle with your usual plan. Seek urgent care for eye pain or vision change, widespread blistering, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or feeling severely unwell.
