How common is spreading skin redness in cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. Inflammation can make a red area expand beyond its starting point, with skin that feels hot, sore, tight, or swollen. The colour may be less obvious on some skin tones, so warmth, pain, swelling, and a rapidly changing border also matter.

Arrange same-day medical assessment when redness is enlarging, especially if you also feel feverish or unwell. A clinician may mark the edge to track change and decide whether antibiotic treatment is needed. Rest the affected area, keep any wound clean, and do not squeeze blisters or use leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe, swelling is marked, or the infection is near the eye. Fever, chills, dizziness, confusion, purple or blistered skin, or feeling seriously ill can signal a more severe infection.
