How common is sore throat in tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, the tissue at the back of the throat. The discomfort may feel scratchy, burning, or sharp when swallowing, and it can range from mild to severe.

Alongside throat pain, tonsillitis can cause red or swollen tonsils, pain on swallowing, fever, tender glands in the neck, a muffled voice, bad breath, or visible white patches. Viral and bacterial infections can both inflame the tonsils, and an examination can help a clinician judge whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

A sore throat by itself does not identify the cause. Colds, dry air, reflux, allergies, smoke exposure, and other throat infections can produce similar discomfort.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose foods that are comfortable to swallow, such as cool drinks or soft meals. Gargling warm salt water may soothe some adults and older children who can gargle safely. Avoid smoke and other irritants while the throat is sore.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief for you or your child, taking account of age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Antibiotics are not suitable for every sore throat; use them only when prescribed.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe swelling in the mouth or throat, dehydration, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of the underlying cause.

Arrange a medical review if throat pain is severe, keeps returning, does not improve, or comes with a high fever, rash, one-sided throat swelling, or neck swelling. Children who are drinking poorly or seem unusually sleepy should also be assessed.

Ask whether the appearance of the tonsils and your other symptoms suggest a viral infection, whether a throat swab is useful, and which pain-relief options fit your medical history. If episodes recur, ask what pattern of symptoms should prompt further assessment.
