How common is sore throat in scarlet fever?

Scarlet fever is an infection associated with streptococcal bacteria. Throat pain may come with painful swallowing, swollen neck glands, fever, and enlarged or inflamed tonsils. A fine rash can feel like sandpaper and may begin on the chest or tummy before spreading. The tongue may look coated at first and then become bright red. These features can occur together, but not everyone has the same combination.

A sore throat by itself has many possible causes, including viral infections. The presence of sore throat does not establish scarlet fever. A clinician considers the full symptom pattern and may examine the throat or arrange testing when appropriate.
