How common is sneezing in allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis develops when the nose reacts to inhaled substances such as pollen, house-dust mites, mould, or animal dander. The lining becomes irritated, producing sneezing, an itchy nose, a watery discharge, and congestion. Itchy or watery eyes may occur too. Symptoms often follow a recognisable exposure or seasonal pattern, although the pattern differs between people. Sneezing alone has many possible causes, so it does not establish allergic rhinitis by itself.

Track when sneezing starts and what you were exposed to, such as dust, pets, or outdoor air. Reduce the suspected trigger where practical, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and keep living spaces clean without creating more dust. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a non-drowsy antihistamine or nasal treatment is suitable, especially during pregnancy or with other medicines. Use nasal sprays exactly as directed.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, disturb sleep, affect breathing through the nose, or interfere with work or school despite self-care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction after exposure. Fever, facial pain, or thick discharge may suggest another problem and also merits clinical advice if it continues.
