How common is slurred speech in stroke?

A stroke can affect the brain areas or nerve pathways that coordinate speech. Words may sound thick, slow, weak, or difficult to pronounce. Some strokes instead cause trouble finding words, understanding speech, reading, or speaking at all. Facial drooping, arm weakness, numbness, loss of balance, or sudden vision change may accompany the speech problem. The exact pattern cannot safely be judged at home, and a person may remain awake while a serious stroke is occurring.

Call emergency services as soon as sudden slurred speech begins. Record the time the person was last known to be well, keep them supervised, and follow the emergency operator's instructions. Do not give food, drink, or medicine unless instructed, because swallowing may be unsafe. Do not drive the person if an ambulance is available; specialist care can begin during transport.

Every sudden unexplained speech change deserves emergency assessment, even if it improves quickly or appears mild. Treat accompanying face, arm, balance, vision, or understanding changes as especially urgent. Symptoms that disappear can still represent a transient ischaemic attack and may warn of a stroke. Do not wait for symptoms to settle or for a routine appointment.

Ask which part of speech was affected, what tests were performed, which medicines and rehabilitation may help, and which warning signs should prompt immediate return to hospital.
