How common is slurred speech in hypoglycaemia?

The brain needs a steady supply of glucose. When glucose falls, speech may become slowed, unclear, or difficult to coordinate. Shaking, sweating, hunger, dizziness, irritability, blurred vision, weakness, or confusion can occur at the same time. The person may not recognise the change themselves. If the person is awake and can swallow safely, follow their agreed low-glucose plan and take a rapidly absorbed source of glucose, then recheck as advised. Sit with them and avoid driving, exercise, or operating machinery until fully recovered. If they are confused, having a seizure, unconscious, or unable to swallow, do not give food or drink by mouth; place them safely on their side and call emergency services. Use prescribed rescue treatment only if trained and instructed.

Get emergency help if slurred speech does not improve after the low-glucose plan, keeps returning, or occurs with one-sided weakness, facial drooping, severe headache, or difficulty understanding. Those features can signal a stroke rather than, or as well as, hypoglycaemia. Urgent advice is also needed after an episode causing loss of consciousness or a seizure.
