How common is slurred speech in Bell's palsy?

Bell's palsy affects the facial nerve on one side. Weakness around the mouth can make words sound unclear, alter the shape of certain sounds, or cause saliva to escape. This is different from language trouble, such as being unable to find words, and different from weakness of the tongue or limbs. Facial drooping, difficulty closing one eye, altered taste, or sound sensitivity may occur alongside the speech change. A clinician may need to distinguish Bell's palsy from other causes of sudden speech difficulty.

If the change is mild and began with one-sided facial weakness, arrange prompt medical assessment. Note when the speech change and facial symptoms started, whether they are worsening, and whether an eye will not close. Protect an exposed eye with the care recommended by a clinician, because dryness can injure the eye surface. Do not drive yourself if speech is suddenly changing or other neurological symptoms are present.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden slurred speech with arm or leg weakness, facial drooping beyond the expected pattern, confusion, trouble understanding, severe headache, loss of balance, or new vision changes. These signs can indicate a stroke and require urgent assessment. Seek urgent help even if the symptoms improve. Bell's palsy should not be used to explain away a new or changing speech problem without examination.

Ask whether the speech change fits facial-muscle weakness, how the eye should be protected, which symptoms require emergency help, and when follow-up is needed if facial movement or speech does not improve.
