How common is skin ulcer in stasis dermatitis?

Stasis dermatitis develops when blood has difficulty returning from the lower legs. Fluid can collect around the ankles, causing swelling, itching, scaling, and skin colour changes. Over time, fragile skin may split or form an ulcer, often near the ankle. An ulcer can also have another cause, so a clinical assessment should confirm what is happening.

Book an assessment for any open area, particularly if it is slow to close or keeps returning. Care may include a wound plan and treatment aimed at leg swelling and venous flow. Do not start compression on your own if circulation has not been checked. Gently cleanse the area, use the dressing advised by a clinician, and avoid scratching or applying unapproved creams.

Get prompt care if the ulcer becomes more painful, warm, swollen, foul-smelling, or produces pus, or if redness is spreading. Fever or a sudden increase in leg swelling also warrants quick review. Heavy bleeding, severe weakness, or confusion requires urgent help.

Ask how venous circulation will be assessed, whether compression is suitable for you, how often the dressing should change, and which signs suggest infection or delayed healing.
