How common is skin redness in cellulitis?

Skin redness is a common presentation of cellulitis, often accompanied by warmth, swelling, tenderness, or pain. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue, so the affected area may feel warmer and more sensitive than the surrounding skin.

With cellulitis, redness may spread beyond the original break in the skin and can become more noticeable over time. The skin may look smooth, tight, or shiny because of swelling. Some people also feel unwell, with fever, chills, or tiredness. Cellulitis can affect an arm, leg, face, or another area where bacteria entered through a cut, scratch, insect bite, ulcer, or irritated skin.

Red skin alone does not identify its cause. Irritation, allergy, eczema, sun exposure, a reaction to a product, and other skin conditions can also produce redness. A clinician considers the pattern, warmth, tenderness, swelling, rate of change, and your general health when assessing possible cellulitis.

If redness is warm, tender, swollen, expanding, or associated with feeling unwell, arrange a prompt medical assessment. Do not squeeze blisters or sores. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching it, and note whether the edge of the redness is moving outward. A photograph can help you compare changes, while a simple pen mark around the outer edge may help show whether it is spreading; do not use this to delay care.

Treatment depends on the examination and may include prescribed antibiotics. Take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed and seek further advice if the area continues to worsen or new symptoms appear.

Seek urgent medical help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe or out of proportion to the visible skin changes, or the skin becomes blistered, purple, numb, or unusually dark. Urgent assessment is also needed for fever with confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, marked weakness, or difficulty staying awake. Redness around the eye, on the face, or near a joint deserves prompt attention because infection in these areas can threaten nearby structures or movement.

You could ask: Does the warmth, swelling, and tenderness fit cellulitis or another cause of redness? Should I monitor the edge of the affected area? Which changes mean I should return urgently? How should I care for the skin while it heals, and when should I expect the tenderness or redness to start improving?
