How common is skin rash in hives?

Hives result from the release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Individual welts are often smooth and raised, with colour changes that may be less obvious on some skin tones. Heat, pressure, infections, medicines, foods, or other triggers can be involved, but a trigger is not always found. Swelling deeper in the skin, called angioedema, may affect the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet.

Notice when the welts started and whether heat, pressure, a new product, food, medicine, or illness preceded them. Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is suitable for you, including any age, pregnancy, or medicine considerations. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.

Call emergency services immediately for hives with swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek medical review when episodes keep returning, swelling is painful or persistent, or the rash is accompanied by fever, bruising, or joint pain. A clinician can check whether another cause needs attention.
