Tinea versicolor involves an overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on the skin. It often affects the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms, where patches may join together. Mild itching can occur, particularly with heat or sweating, but discomfort may be limited. The colour difference can remain visible after the yeast is controlled because the skin needs time to regain an even tone.

A clinician can assess the distribution, scale, and colour of the patches and decide whether treatment is appropriate. Antifungal washes or creams may be recommended, and the instructions should be followed for the full advised course. Keep affected areas cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels. Do not rely on the patch colour alone to judge whether treatment has worked.
