How common is skin rash in psoriasis?

Psoriasis can produce clearly defined thickened patches with scale, often on the elbows, knees, scalp, or lower back. It may itch, sting, crack, or feel sore, and it can affect nails or other areas as well. The rash may flare and then settle. Eczema, fungal infection, and contact reactions can resemble psoriasis, so an examination is useful when the diagnosis has not been confirmed.

Apply a plain moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing, and use lukewarm water with a gentle cleanser. Avoid picking scale or rubbing plaques, since injury can provoke new spots in some people. Follow the treatment plan prescribed for you and tell your clinician if the rash is affecting sleep, movement, work, or mood. Keep a record of triggers such as illness, stress, or skin injury if flares follow a pattern.

Contact a clinician if the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, cracked and bleeding, or associated with swollen joints, eye pain, fever, or feeling unwell. Widespread redness with skin tenderness needs prompt assessment. A sudden severe flare after stopping prescribed treatment also deserves timely advice.
