How common is painful skin in cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection of deeper layers of skin and nearby tissue. The affected patch may hurt when it is touched, stretched, or rubbed by clothing. It can become increasingly sore as inflammation spreads. Painful skin has many possible causes, so pain alone cannot identify the cause.

A clinician considers the pattern of symptoms, the appearance of the skin, and whether there has been a break in the skin such as a cut, scratch, bite, or cracked area.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment for a new or worsening painful red area, particularly if it feels hot or looks swollen. Keep the area clean, avoid picking at it, and protect any open skin with a clean dressing. Note whether the redness is expanding or the tenderness is changing.

Do not share towels that have touched an open or weeping area. If treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and contact the prescriber if symptoms are not improving or are getting worse.

Seek urgent medical care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, you develop fever or chills, see red streaking, feel faint or confused, or notice dark, blistered, or numb skin. These changes need timely assessment. Get emergency help for trouble breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.
