How common is painful skin in boils?

A boil is a deeper infection around a hair follicle. It often starts as a tender, red, swollen spot and may become a firm lump as inflammatory fluid and infected material collect. The skin can feel warm, tight, or throbbing, and pain may increase when clothing rubs against it or when the area is pressed. A cluster of connected boils is more extensive. Painful skin has many possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot identify a boil.

Apply a clean, warm, damp cloth to the area for short periods several times through the day, then wash your hands. Keep the boil covered with a clean dressing if it drains, and do not share towels, razors, or clothing. Do not squeeze, lance, or pierce it, because pressure can spread infection into nearby tissue. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief and whether the boil needs drainage or prescription treatment.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads, pain is severe or worsening, the boil is near the eye or nose, or you develop fever, chills, or feel unwell. Arrange medical review if several boils appear, one keeps returning, or it does not improve. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or medicines that suppress immunity should seek advice early because infections may need closer monitoring.
