How common are skin lumps in a scalp cyst?

A pilar cyst forms from the outer root sheath of a hair follicle and commonly appears on the scalp. It is usually a smooth, firm or rubbery lump under the skin and may move slightly. It can remain quiet for a long time, then become sore, swollen, or red if inflamed or infected. A small central opening is less typical for a pilar cyst than for some other cysts. The appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, particularly if the lump is new or unusual.

Avoid squeezing, piercing, or trying to empty the cyst, since this can push material into surrounding tissue and cause infection. Keep the scalp clean and note changes in size, tenderness, redness, or drainage. Arrange an appointment if it catches on a comb, causes repeated irritation, or makes diagnosis uncertain.
